05/19/2020The product design process involves laying out all the steps that need to be taken from conceptualizing an initial design to the product’s eventual commercialization. Product designers come up with and systematically assess ideas in their quest to develop new product inventions.
Product designers typically combine the latest technology with art and science when creating innovative new products for people to use. Advanced digital tools now enable them to better visualize concepts, communicate, collaborate and analyze their ideas. In years past this process required a lot more time and manpower.
All the design elements in a product, which include color, shape and size, should work together so that it’s appealing so people will buy the product. This means the product designer must understand the target audience, the product’s end consumers. Focusing on how consumers will ultimately view the product while designing it can only contribute to its success. Unfortunately, it’s impossible to design something that will appeal to everyone within a specific target audience.
The only way to overcome this is for product designers to create products with personality, products that tell a story. Products that convey these attributes through their function and appearance will definitely appeal to more customers.
It is important that product designers envision how people will use the product as well as how they’re likely to abuse it. Many products have failed because mistakes were made during the design process, making them faulty. Product designers would be wise to consider all the ways people dream they could use a particular object.
Product designs of all types are associated with the economic strength of the various manufacturing sectors. With more innovation there comes increased competition for new product development. Advancements in technology drive creativity when it comes to design interpretation.
All it takes is a single manufacturer with an innovative new product paradigm to compel others to catch up. This drives further innovation. When products are designed to benefit all ages and levels of ability, they help people be more independent, especially seniors. This is something we can all appreciate, since we will all grow older.
Today's product designers do the following:
- Invent products, from the initial concept to creating the prototype and taking it to market.
- Use Computer Aided Design (CAD) technology to develop a 3D model that can convey the product’s concept. Using CAD the designer can easily visualize, manipulate and alter the concept better than if they used a 2D method.
The entire product design process has evolved enormously in the last several years due to the rise of 3D printing. The latest user-friendly 3D printers produce 3 dimensional objects by printing upwards using plastic. This goes well beyond traditional printers that only print ink on a surface.
